Pack Racks Appear in Portland’s Newest Home Shop: Woonwinkel

April 12, 2011, Portland, Oregon –Portland’s newest home shop, woonwinkel, brings the best of independent international designers together with the best of the Pacific Northwest’s independent designers and small companies.

“There are world class designers all over Portland who are watching what’s going on in international design. They go to places like the Milan Furniture Fair and they see that independent European designers are often doing very innovative work...We want to bring the work of these designers to Portland.” said owner Kristin Van Buskirk, who enjoyed floating around to different design shows while living abroad in The Netherlands. “But”, said owner Erica Essink, “That’s only part of the equation. We’re inspired by these independent European designers but we also have some exceptionally talented designers in our own backyard. We want to provide a venue for the best of the Pacific Northwest’s independent designers.”

Pack Racks by Steph Mantis sit perfectly next to the earthen dishware by the Dutch studio Atelier NL, a rough-hewn but brightly-colored side table by Jens Fager, and Hella Jongerius’s iconic ceramic vessels. Woonwinkel has a decidedly modern aesthetic. But it’s not the slick, hard edges many people associate with modern décor. “We want to cultivate the very human side of modern that has been emerging: wood, wool, clay,” said Essink,” We describe it as new modern.”

Van Buskirk picked up not only a penchant for independent European designers while living in The Netherlands--she also picked up a little Dutch. “Woonwinkel means home shop in Dutch. I was learning the language when my partner and I cooked up the idea of this shop, and I sort of used it as my code word. But we realized it had a nice ring to it in English too—it tells a lot about us—it’s not too serious.” While Essink and Van Buskirk are serious about excellent design, their shop also reflects the levity they feel makes a house a home.

Woonwinkel is now open for business at 935 SW Washington, Tuesday through Saturday, 11-6, and Sunday, 12-5, in the quickly transforming West End neighborhood.

Grand Opening Party: Thursday, June 2, 6-9pm, 935 SW Washington Street

So my good friend Peter Ahern and I have been collaborating on this photo project for the past month or so. I post a photo a day (Monday through Friday... we enjoy weekends away from the internet), and he writes a caption for it. We don't talk about it: he accepts the photo, I accept his quote.

Trust, baby-- we got it.

Our inner circle likes to call it BTA.
Enjoy.
